It can be difficult to know if you’re ready to start a business; it’s more than checking off a list. It’s a process of self-reflection, preparation, learning, and, most importantly, timing. For many people starting a business, the process can be highly shaped by family, community, culture, and responsibility.

Before you decide whether you are ready to start a business, it’s okay to check in with yourself. Some resources can help you be prepared and teach you everything you need to know about business. The real challenge comes down to listening to your inner self and determining how you feel. It also means considering how running a business will fit into your life alongside your cultural obligations, community expectations, family responsibilities, and income requirements.

The business readiness resources bring together practical tools to help you reflect before registering a business. They are designed to help you define your current position and determine your next steps. This could be starting your business journey, preparing to start, or waiting while you build confidence or secure support.

Am I Ready to Start a Business?

Personal readiness self-assessment

Use the ‘Am I Ready to Start a Business’ self-assessment to reflect on your readiness regarding your business idea and direction. The assessment helps you evaluate your feelings about areas of your business. We encourage you to use it to understand your current position better and determine whether to start now, continue preparing, or seek assistance.

Business Readiness Health Check

Official Queensland Government online tool

The Business Readiness Health Check is an online self-assessment created by Business Queensland as part of the Queensland Government’s official business support framework. This tool focuses on the real-world aspects of business ownership, including your motivations and expectations, the time and energy you can dedicate to a business, and your financial preparedness.

Use it to evaluate your business strengths and identify areas that may require attention. Understanding these areas will give you a head start on your business journey and better prepare you for success.

You can save or email your report and revisit the tool over time as your readiness evolves.

Skills and Experience Inventory Worksheet

Recognising what you already bring

Many people underestimate their skills because they were developed outside of formal employment or education. The skills and experience inventory worksheet helps you identify your practical, technical, and transferable skills, as well as your everyday knowledge, tools, assets, and resources.

This worksheet encourages you to recognise that strengths don’t always come from long-term employment, courses, or certificates; they can also be cultivated through everyday interactions.

Once you have identified your existing skills, you can highlight the skills you want to improve and plan how to learn them at your own pace. The goal is not to feel fully prepared but to acknowledge and make visible the strengths and capabilities you already possess.

Starting a Business Checklist

Starting a business can feel overwhelming, but having a clear roadmap makes the journey much easier. This Starting a Business Checklist provides a step-by-step guide to help you move from idea to launch with confidence.

The checklist covers key areas including testing your business idea, choosing the right structure, registering your business, organising finances, attracting customers, hiring staff and protecting your business. It’s designed to help you understand the practical and legal steps involved in establishing a business in Australia so you can start strong and avoid common pitfalls.

Whether you’re still shaping your idea or ready to take the first official steps, this resource will help you stay organised and focused as you build your business foundations.

How These Tools Work Together

Use the resources together or separately, depending on where you are in your business journey. Move between them at your own pace, in any order, and come back to them at each stage you move through to help steady your confidence.

If you decide right now isn’t the best time to start a business, you can always pause and come back when you are.

What’s Next?

When you’re ready, you can move on to the next stage of building your business by exploring Business Identity.

If you do not feel ready, you can pause here and speak with a business advisor or mentor.
